Definition
The commercialization of research is a broad field and can take various forms. Its definition differs according to the sources and the organizations, which is why we present here the definition which has been adopted by the FRM.
According to the CNE (National Evaluation Committee):
Valorization corresponds to the means of “making the results, knowledge and skills of research usable or marketable”.
Valorization therefore aims to increase the value of research results in order to guarantee its impact on the socio-economic world. These development activities then involve transfers of knowledge and skills, from research units to socio-economic user partners, driving a partnership dynamic.
Here is a non-exhaustive general diagram (in French) presenting the 3 main directions of the search results.
And after research?
The publication and dissemination of scientific culture obviously contribute to promoting research projects but are not taken into account in the definition of promotion as used here.
What are the tools of valuation?
As shown in the diagram above, the main valuation tools are:
1. The protection of intellectual property which is included in the maturation stage of a project.
Intellectual property includes:
- Industrial property: patents, trademarks, designs and models
- Literary and artistic property: copyright (scientific book, software, etc.) and related rights (databases, etc.)
The protection of intellectual property is a prerequisite for the valorization of research results. Note that the filing of a patent application must be made before any publications on the invention. Otherwise, the invention is no longer considered new and protection cannot be obtained.
2. Technology transfer, which is the process designating the formal transfer to industry of discoveries resulting from university or private research with the aim of commercializing them in the form of new products and/or services.
Technology transfer can take the form of:
- A concession of operating license in a company
- Starting a business
